I was a an annual May Day party that the group has been playing at over the past dozen years. My daughter who was 16 at the time had also being attending the party every year since she was about 2 years old. During one of the set breaks, I was pushing my daughter on a huge rope swing which had been part of this tradition. Got me to thinkin' about how the years had flown and how she would be going off on her own pretty soon. Wrote the lyrics soon after and put it to a irish/scottish sounding musical idea.

When you were just........ a little child..... upon your daddy’s knee
You filled our house......with love and smiles.....and curiousity
With each new day.....you found a way.....to change and learn and grow
Into the one..... that you’ve become.....on journeys that you go

Now it reminds.....me of the time.....of when I did the same
My father sighed.....my mother cried....’twas time that was to blame
You can’t forget.....it never lets..........you hold to things for keeps
But when you ache......to make a break......it’s with your faith you leap
You wonder where the time it goes...from egg to butterfly
You’re on your own...... you’re leaving home.....across the rolling sky

The plane it lifts.....you wonder if.....the clouds will make you cry
And through the tears.....and through the years......you bid the past goodbye
As lives will move.....in different ways.....the thoughts play in your mind
You choose instead.....to look ahead.....and cross the rolling sky
You wonder where the time it goes...and places you or I
You’re on your own...... you’re leaving home.....across the rolling sky
